AUDIO VERSION

Jesus tells us about the story of two builders: a wise one and a foolish one.

“Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: (Matthew 7:24)

The foolish man builds his house on sand. When a storm comes, the house falls with a great crash. Jesus says people who hear His teachings but do not put them into practice are like that foolish builder.

The wise builder builds his house on the rock. When rain and winds come, his home stands firm.

No matter where we come from, we know more spiritual truth than living out right now. We need to start where we are today. Practice what we already know. And then, as we learn more and put that into practice, we become a doer of the Word.

Hearing the Word of God or just talking about the Word of God is not enough. We have to be “doers of the Word and not hearers only.” God’s Word is not only to be stored in the back of our minds but lived out in every moment of our day.

“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.” (1 John 2:15-17)

We are responsible for what we hear and responsible for living it out in our lives. If we are not doers of the Word, but hearers only, we deceive ourselves. The Word deceive means to be misled. If there is no doing of the Word of God in our lives, we are fooling ourselves into thinking we are right with God, when maybe we are not –

God wants us to grow, knowing what we were, knowing what He has done for us, and knowing what we are in Him right now.

What are some specific ways your life has changed by doing what the Bible teaches?

Heavenly Father, I will be a doer of Your Word, not a hearer only. I will guard against deceit by reading, meditating, and doing your Word. You will guide me, speak to me, and lead me. You know the path I should take, and I willingly give my whole being to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
