EXPECTED KING

When Jesus entered Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, it was the equivalent of walking the red carpet. In Bible times, that was a royal status. Except, the red carpet was made of palm leaves spread out for Jesus to walk on in this case.
“and killed the Prince of life, whom God raised from the dead, of which we are witnesses.” (Acts 3:15)
Palm leaves were a sign of respect and adoration, but also rebellion. The people of Israel had been waiting for their Messiah, their promised Deliverer who would save them from their oppression. They wanted Jesus to be their liberator and their future King.
“Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace There will be no end, Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, To order it and establish it with judgment and justice From that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.” (Isaiah 9:6-7)
In a few days, all of those hopes would be gone. Fair-weather followers of Jesus would scatter. Jesus would die for the sins of the world, to liberate us in ways God’s people at the time were not even expecting.
When we read about Palm Sunday, we have the benefit of hindsight. We know Jesus' Kingdom is an eternal Kingdom, not an earthly one. We still find ourselves today in the same place as those people who were confused when Jesus did not live up to their expectations.
We can walk through life with expectations for God, but God's plans do not necessarily follow our expectations. In these times, we must decide whether we are faithful followers or fair-weather followers.
Are you willing to trust God and His plans for your life?
Heavenly Father, I am so thankful for Jesus. I will be a follower that is faithful and not a fair-weather follower. I must learn to follow what You have for instructions in Your Word. I will follow You in reading and doing Your Word. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
