AUDIO VERSION

Jesus restored our relationship with God. Through faith in Jesus, we are God's sons or daughters. In living for God, one of the greatest challenges we will face is where our priorities are.

"but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal." (Matthew 6:20)

After reading today's Bible verse about treasures, we can see a direct correlation between “earthly treasures” (how we handle our money and possessions with our faith) and “heavenly treasures” (tithing, sharing with others, and being a generous person). We either worship wealth or worship with our wealth.

We need to stop focusing on accumulating money and stuff and setting our hearts to pursue "treasures in heaven."

There is a tendency to think that "treasures in heaven" only refer to tithing, sharing with others, and being generous. Jesus talks about receiving "treasures in heaven" and "being repaid" when He returns. We know that storing up "treasures in heaven" includes giving to God's kingdom, nonprofits, and those in need. But that is not all.

It includes living for God's glory and the good of others. The Bible refers to many ways we can store up "treasures in heaven" or "rewards," Real wealth is gained by investing in "treasures in heaven."

When we give, pray, forgive, share the gospel, love our enemies, and turn the other cheek, we are building treasures in heaven.

“Blessed are the pure in heart, For they shall see God.” (Matthew 5:8)

When it comes to rewards, our greatest reward as Believers that we will receive is seeing God face-to-face.

This is why Jesus connected His command to stop laying up "earthly treasures" and store up "treasures in heaven" to the heart. Jesus knew that what we value in our hearts reflects in how we live.

When the "world" is our desire, we will be committed to storing up "earthly treasures." But when God is our treasure, we will devote our lives to live for His glory and the good of others.

Today, ask yourself: Do I treasure God, or do I treasure the world? Do I obsess over earning more money or buying more things? Or am I consumed with living and loving like Jesus? The answer to these questions will let you know if you are living for God in your heart.

Do you live your life for God because of what God can do for you, or do you live for God because you can be with Him?

Heavenly Father, I will lay up for myself treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. This comes by knowing You and having Your Words live in me. Thank You for providing for me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
