LISTENING AND PAYING ATTENTION

When danger is coming toward us, our first reaction should be to pay attention, but it is easy to get distracted. Paying attention always has presented challenges. We live in a distracting world that captures our attention and distractions abound, making concentration difficult.
Many believers experience these patterns in their spiritual lives, as well. They find it difficult to concentrate while reading the Bible. They lose their concentration during prayer time, and they quickly forget the insights from a sermon or message.
“Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall” (1 Corinthians 10:12)
The Bible reminds us of the importance of listening and paying attention. We are warned of the consequences when we do not listen carefully. When we do not pay attention, we do not have the sensitivity to remember what we read in the Bible as we study God’s principles for our lives.
“Now therefore, listen to me, my children; Pay attention to the words of my mouth: Do not let your heart turn aside to her ways, Do not stray into her paths; For she has cast down many wounded, And all who were slain by her were strong men.” (Proverbs 7:24-26)
We need to ask God to help us become a more careful listener and reader to help us concentrate and remember. Help to minimize distractions and make it a priority to focus on God’s Word while staying sensitive to the Holy Spirit. God’s Word spoken out loud to Him will allow You to focus on what you are reading.
“For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12)
Even right now, all the things that we heard and saw before are coming at us from different directions, competing for our attention. Meanwhile, God is trying to tell us something. All we have to do is pay attention to His voice.
Will you pay attention to God’s voice today?
Heavenly Father, I know in this busy distracting world, I must keep focused on You. Jesus is coming back, and I want to be ready. As I read Your Word aloud, I will be able to hear and obey. You are leading me, and I must follow. I will not be distracted as I stay sensitive to the Holy Spirit. Thank You for this comfort. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
